Hugh Conlon, UT Ornamental Horticulture Specialist, will show and discuss some of the best perennials to have in your low maintenance landscape.

11:45-1:00   Composting
Mike McGrath, host of public radio’s You Bet Your Garden, will entertain you while you learn the easiest composting methods to keep your landscape healthy and beautiful.

2:00-3:15    Preserving Cut Flowers
Linda Doan, a specialty cut flower grower and owner of Aunt Willie’s Wildflowers, illustrates the best flowers to grow for cutting and preserving. Through discussion and slides, learn how to have fun cutting and preserving perennials, annuals, bulbs, and woodies.

3:30 - 4:45 Answers to Your Garden Questions
Bring your lawn and garden questions to our featured speaker, Mike McGrath of You Bet Your Garden, for a spirited and entertaining discussion with one of public radio’s favorite hosts.

10:15-11:30  It All Starts With A Seed
Learn how to choose varieties of vegetable and flower seeds, where to buy them and how to save them. Tom Peterson of Appalachian Sustainable Development and his wife Deni have been raising organic fruits, flowers, and vegetables for over 20 years.

11:45-1:00  The Woods in Your Backyard
Where does the backyard end and the forest begin? David Richert, a Resource Conservation and Development Forester with the Virginia Department of Forestry, will present information about backyard forests and provide some perspectives about how to manage them.

2:00 - 3:15  Is This a Good Bug?
Eric Day, manager of the VT Insect Identification Lab, will help us to identify those sometimes destructive or sometimes helpful insects in our gardens.

3:30-4:45   The Bluebirds are Back
Earl Morris, a member of the board of directors of the Virginia Bluebird Society, will give an update on these lovely birds. Learn how to attract and keep bluebirds around your home and garden.

Friday, April 16,  3:30-5:00     Rain Garden Tour
Tour rain gardens in Abingdon and discover how to add this landscape feature to your yard.  Tour will feature gardens installed by the Upper Tennessee River Roundtable in partnership with other agencies and the Town of Abingdon. Transportation provided. No additional fee for the tour. Participation is limited-arrive early! Please go to the Garden Faire Information Booth for directions.
